Rs 3,000 a month will not change a family’s fortune. Ask the worker at a Lahore flour mill what it does change, though, and he will tell you: the end of the month stops being a negotiation with the karyana shopkeeper.
The Maryam Nawaz Ration Card puts that Rs 3,000 of grocery support into the hands of Punjab’s registered workers every month. One confusion needs clearing first, because half the internet gets it wrong. This card is not an open scheme for every poor family, and there is no separate form for it anywhere. Read on and you will understand how it actually reaches a worker.
What Is the Maryam Nawaz Ration Card
The card is run by PESSI, the Punjab Employees Social Security Institution, and it covers workers registered under the province’s social security system. Around 1.25 million secured workers are the programme’s target. The subsidy is spent on groceries like flour, rice, sugar and ghee at designated shops across Punjab.
The Programme Is Here to Stay
On October 20 the provincial cabinet approved the programme’s continuation, and the chief minister directed that registration be widened so more workers come under it. The province’s new budget also carries a heavy allocation for the card, which tells you this is not a scheme about to be wound up. Workers registered with PESSI also stand behind the health cover in our social security mobile health guide, and families should know the province’s wider cover in our Sehat Card guide too.

How a Worker Actually Gets the Card
Here is the part most guides skip, because it is less exciting than a fake online form. You cannot apply for this card on its own. Your employer registers you with PESSI and pays your social security contribution. Once your name sits on that register, PESSI links your record to the card. Newly registered workers are added over time as offices update their data, not on the same day.
So the practical steps are these. Ask your employer or HR office whether the business is registered with PESSI and whether you are on its list. If you are not, press them to register you; your PESSI social security card is the proof that you are covered. Domestic workers are the exception: cooks, drivers and cleaners working in private homes can register through PESSI’s own domestic worker form. Keep your CNIC valid, because card holders are verified by biometrics.

Using the Card at the Shop
At the shop, ask first whether the Maryam Nawaz Ration Card is accepted there, then shop against your Rs 3,000 balance. The card covers the kitchen basics that eat a worker’s wage first: flour, rice, sugar, ghee and the everyday items a family cannot skip.
Stay Safe From Card Fraud
Guard the card like cash. Never hand its PIN to anyone, not the shopkeeper, and certainly not a caller who claims to be from PESSI; genuine officers never ask for it. For questions and complaints, PESSI’s helplines are 1105 and 0800-73774.
