Ask any farmer what eats the biggest hole in their budget. It’s not seeds. It’s not fertilizer. It’s irrigation. Diesel prices and electricity bills have made running a tubewell the most expensive part of farming. Many farmers now run their tubewells fewer hours than their crops actually need, and the harvest pays the price. The Punjab government wants to change this equation. The Punjab Solar Tubewell Scheme helps farmers switch their tubewells to solar power, backed by a large government subsidy.
Own agricultural land and a tubewell in Punjab? Then read on. I’ll break down the subsidy for each system size, who’s eligible, and exactly how to apply. Simple words, no jargon.
What Is the Punjab Solar Tubewell Scheme
Here’s the setup. The Punjab Agriculture Department runs this scheme under the CM Solarization Program for Agri Tubewells. It converts diesel and electric tubewells into solar powered systems. The target? Around 8,000 tubewells across the province. That’s the scale we’re talking about.
Why bother switching? Two big reasons. First, once installed, a solar tubewell cuts your irrigation cost to almost zero. Second, you stop depending on the grid and diesel suppliers. No more load shedding ruining your watering schedule in the crucial season. That peace of mind alone is worth a lot.

Subsidy for Each System Size
The subsidy is fixed, and it depends on your system size. Here are the three tiers:
- 10 kW solar system: Rs 500,000 subsidy
- 15 kW solar system: Rs 750,000 subsidy
- 20 kW solar system: Rs 1,000,000 subsidy
The farmer pays whatever cost is left after the subsidy. That’s the deal. This shared cost model keeps the program serious and cuts down misuse. If you’ve read our Punjab Livestock Card guide, you’ll recognize the same idea at work: the government shares the cost, and the farmer owns the asset outright.
Who Can Apply for the Punjab Solar Tubewell Scheme
Do you qualify? You can apply if you meet all of these conditions:
- You are a resident of Punjab with a valid CNIC
- You own at least one acre of agricultural land
- You already have a working diesel or electric tubewell
- Only one solar system is allowed per family
- Your electricity bills, if any, are fully paid
When applications cross the available systems, beneficiaries are picked through a computerized ballot. Fair and transparent. And if you’re looking for interest free options on the farming side generally, our CM Punjab loan schemes guide is worth a read too.

How to Apply
Applying is straightforward. Go to the official program portal and apply online. Attach clear copies of your CNIC, your land ownership proof, and the latest tubewell electricity bill wherever it applies. Not comfortable online? Paper application forms are available at your district’s Agriculture Department office too.
Questions? The reported helpline is 0800 17000. One practical tip: keep your mobile number active at all times. Ballot results and verification calls come on your registered number. A switched off phone has cost people their slot before.
Ready? Start your application on the official solar tubewell portal.
Tips Before You Install
Before you pick a system size, get your water level checked. This step matters more than people think. A 10 kW system suits shallow water fine. But deeper borewells need 15 or 20 kW. Go undersized and you’ll regret it badly in peak summer, right when your crops need water most.
And buy only from program approved vendors. Keep every single receipt. Here’s why: systems installed outside the program don’t qualify for the subsidy, period. And no private installer can enroll you in the ballot, no matter what they promise.
